On the night of 9 March 1908, a group of 44 players and officials broke away from the Milan Cricket and Football Club specifically because that club refused to allow foreign players in their squad. The new club was named Football Club Internazionale, and co-founder Giorgio Muggiani, a painter and graphic designer, is credited with designing the black and blue stripes while reportedly looking up at the night sky, black for darkness and blue for the stars. In their second season of existence, 1909/10, Inter won their first Serie A title. They are the only club in Italy never to have been relegated to Serie B across their entire history, a record they have held for over 115 years.

Inter won the Champions League in 1964, 1965, and 2010. The 2010 title, won under José Mourinho with a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich at the Bernabéu, completed the first ever treble by an Italian club, combining the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia, and the Champions League in a single season. Between 2005/06 and 2009/10, the club won five consecutive Serie A titles. Their most recent championship run came in the 2023/24 season, when they clinched the Scudetto with five games to spare, and they have went on to win the 2025/26 Serie A title as well, their 21st overall, the current reigning champions of Italy.
Inter's shirts have been made by Nike since 1998, one of the longest active partnerships between a shirt manufacturer and a major European club. The home shirt has remained consistently built on broad vertical black and blue stripes across its entire history, with the exception of a brief period in the late 1920s. One recurring design detail across many Inter home shirts is the gold or yellow Biscione, the serpent symbol of the city of Milan, which appears on the badge and occasionally as a graphic element within the kit design itself. The away shirts in recent seasons have taken white as their base with the red cross of Milan incorporated as a tribute to the city, a nod first introduced in the club's centennial year in 2008.
