AFC Ajax have won the Eredivisie 36 times, the KNVB Cup 20 times, and the Champions League four times, in 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1995. The 2021/22 season had been one of their best in years: they won the Eredivisie with 90 points, finished first in their Champions League group, and were heading into 2022/23 as defending champions with genuine European ambitions.

The 2022/23 season was one of the most dramatic collapses in the club's modern history. Going into the season as Eredivisie title holders, Ajax were eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage after finishing third in a group containing Liverpool and Napoli, their heaviest home defeat being a 6–1 loss to Napoli at the Johan Cruyff Arena in October 2022. In the Eredivisie, coach Alfred Schreuder was sacked in January 2023 with the club fifth in the table. Under caretaker John Heitinga the club recovered slightly, finishing third, while Feyenoord were crowned champions for the first time since half a decade. Ajax also lost the KNVB Cup final. Mohammed Kudus was the club's top scorer across all competitions with 18 goals, and Brian Brobbey led the scoring charts in the Eredivisie with 13.

This Ajax 2022/23 home shirt is made by Adidas and was marketed under the name "Golden Moments," a reference to the club's 1995 Champions League-winning era. The shirt features the classic white base with a broad red central stripe, but the distinguishing feature of this particular season is the gold trim running through the collar, sleeve cuffs, the Ajax crest, and the Ziggo sponsor logo. The three Adidas stripes on the shoulders are red. The collar is an overlapping V-style in white with a thin gold trim, giving it an understated, premium feel. It is a shirt worn during what turned out to be the beginning of several difficult years for the club.
