Atalanta Bergamo were founded in 1907 in Bergamo, a city of around 120.000 people in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. They play at the New Balance Stadium, with a capacity of 24.000 that was reconstructed between 2019 and 2023. The club's home colours are vertical black and blue stripes, earning them the nickname Nerazzurri, which they share with Inter Milan. Atalanta have won Serie A once in 1987, but have become one of the most consistent teams in Italy under coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who took charge in 2016.

They made their Champions League debut in the 2019/20 season, where they made it all the way to the quarter finals. The 2020/21 season was another strong year under Gasperini. They also reached the Coppa Italia final, where they lost 2-1 to Juventus, and reached the round of 16 in the Champions League before being beaten 5-0 on aggregate by Real Madrid. Luis Muriel, the Colombian forward signed from Fiorentina in 2019, was the club's top scorer across all competitions with 26 goals, including 22 in Serie A and 3 in the Champions League. Muriel scored those 22 league goals from just 27 appearances, often coming off the bench, meaning he averaged a goal every 57 minutes of league football that season. It matched his own personal Serie A scoring record set the previous year.

This Atalanta 2020/21 home shirt is made by Joma and features thinner black and blue vertical stripes than the previous seasons.
