Barcelona 2020/21 Home Shirt Pique

The Barcelona 2020/21 home shirt was made by Nike and marked the return of the club's traditional vertical stripes after the chequered design used the previous season. Each blue and red stripe is outlined with a thin gold border, inspired by the Barcelona crest that appeared on the club's shirts during the 1920s, a decade often referred to as Barca's first golden era. The shirt has a round collar with matching gold trim and the Catalan Senyera flag stitched below the back of the neck. This shirt is printed with Gerard Pique's name and number 3, the number he wore throughout his second spell at Barcelona after returning from Manchester United in 2008. The 2020/21 season was one of transition for Barcelona. Ronald Koeman replaced Quique Setién as head coach following the club's 8-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the previous Champions League campaign. Barcelona finished third in LaLiga with 79 points and won the Copa del Rey after defeating Athletic Club 4-0 in the final, the club's only major trophy of the season. They also reached the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, where they were eliminated 5-2 on aggregate by Paris Saint-Germain. Gerard Pique missed a large part of the campaign after suffering a serious knee ligament injury against Atletico Madrid in November 2020, but returned in time for the decisive part of the season. He made 23 appearances in all competitions and scored 2 goals, while also becoming one of the captains responsible for guiding a squad that included emerging talents Pedri, Ronald Araujo and Oscar Mingueza.

Gerard Pique had already established himself as one of the most successful defenders in football by the time this shirt was worn. After coming through Barcelona's famous La Masia academy, he spent four years at Manchester United before returning to his boyhood club in 2008. Between 2008 and 2021, Pique won eight LaLiga titles, three UEFA Champions League trophies and seven Copa del Rey titles with Barcelona. Internationally, he formed one of football's most successful defensive partnerships alongside Sergio Ramos, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012 with Spain. His ability to play out from the back made him a perfect fit for Barcelona's possession based style, and he finished his career with well over 600 appearances for the club.
