Chelsea went through two managers during the 2011/12 season, sacking Andre Villas-Boas in March with the club sitting fifth in the Premier League, and turning to former player Roberto Di Matteo to see out the remaining eleven matches on a caretaker basis.
The Premier League campaign ended in Chelsea's lowest league finish of the Roman Abramovich era, sixth place, but the cup competitions told a different story entirely. Di Matteo led Chelsea to the FA Cup, beating Liverpool 2-1 in the final, and then to the Champions League title that had eluded the club for years. Chelsea trailed Napoli 3-1 after the first leg of the round of 16 before winning the tie in extra time, then beat holders Barcelona in the semi-final despite playing much of the second leg with ten men, and faced Bayern Munich in the final at Bayern's own Allianz Arena. Didier Drogba equalised with a header in the 88th minute after Bayern had led since Thomas Muller's goal seven minutes earlier, and the match went to a penalty shootout that Drogba himself settled, scoring the winning spot kick to give Chelsea their first ever Champions League title.
This home shirt, made by adidas, uses a blue-dominant design, the first time white had been so prominent on a Chelsea home shirt since the club's 1997 to 1999 kit. It carries the Samsung sponsor logo and Chelsea's lion crest, and Drogba wore it throughout the domestic season, in what turned out to be his final campaign at the club before a move to Shanghai Shenhua that summer.
