Alan Shearer scored his 201st goal for Newcastle United in a home match against Portsmouth on 4 February 2006, breaking a club scoring record of 200 that had stood for 49 years since Jackie Milburn set it in the 1950s.
The 2005/06 season was Shearer's last as a player, following a change of heart the previous year, when manager Graeme Souness persuaded him to postpone retirement by twelve months. Souness himself did not see out the campaign, sacked in February 2006 after a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City left Newcastle in 15th place, with youth academy director Glenn Roeder stepping in as caretaker and steering the club up to seventh by the end of the season. Shearer's own career ended prematurely on 17 April 2006, when he tore his knee ligaments during a 4-1 win at Sunderland, scoring his 206th and final goal from the penalty spot in that same match, his 395th appearance for the club. A testimonial against Celtic followed on 11 May, watched by more than 52,000 fans, with Shearer fittingly scoring the winning penalty in a 3-2 win.
This Newcastle United 2005/06 home shirt carries the Northern Rock sponsor logo across the chest, a partnership that ran throughout Shearer's later years at the club. Shearer wore this shirt in a player-coach capacity for much of the season, having taken on informal coaching duties alongside his playing role, and it remains one of the most sought-after Newcastle shirts among collectors given its place in the story of the club's and Premier League's all-time record goal scorer. This iconic Newcastle shirt comes in size large (L) and mint condition, which means the shirt is as new and does not show any signs of wear.
