PSV Eindhoven were the reigning Eredivisie champions going into the 2008/09 season, having won their fourth consecutive league title in 2007/08. The club is one of only three clubs in Dutch football, alongside Ajax and Feyenoord, to have won the Champions League, which they claimed in 1988 under Guus Hiddink with a squad featuring Romário and Ronald Koeman. Going into 2008/09 under new coach Huub Stevens, PSV also had a spot in the UEFA Champions League group stage, placed in Group D alongside Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, and Marseille.
The 2008/09 season turned out to be a difficult one. PSV finished bottom of their Champions League group without winning a single game, collecting just two points from six matches. Domestically, Huub Stevens resigned in late January 2009 with the team struggling, and assistant Dwight Lodeweges took over as caretaker for the remainder of the campaign. PSV ultimately finished fourth in the Eredivisie, with AZ Alkmaar winning the title, a significant step down from the previous season's championship. Ibrahim Afellay was the club's top scorer with 13 goals across all competitions, and the squad included players such as Balázs Dzsudzsák and Erik Pieters.
