This was the first Real Madrid season since 2008/09 without Cristiano Ronaldo, who left for Juventus in the summer of 2018 for a reported fee of around one hundred million euros, ending a decade in which he scored 450 goals and won four Champions League titles for the club.
The campaign that followed is remembered as one of the most turbulent in the club's modern history. Julen Lopetegui was appointed head coach after the 2018 World Cup but was sacked on 29 October, following a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Barcelona in El Clasico, and replaced by Castilla coach Santiago Solari. Real Madrid did lift the FIFA Club World Cup that December, beating Al Ain 4-1 in the final to become the tournament's outright record winners with four titles, but league form kept sliding, and Zinedine Zidane returned as head coach on 11 March 2019 to see out the rest of the season. The club also suffered a shock Champions League exit in the round of 16, beaten by Ajax 4-1 on aggregate.
Made by adidas and unveiled just days after Real Madrid's third consecutive Champions League final win in Kyiv, this Real Madrid 2018/19 home shirt keeps a clean, understated design in the club's traditional white, with black trim on the sleeves. Notably, Ronaldo did not appear in any of the launch photography or promotional videos for the kit, a small but telling detail from the summer of his departure. The shirt was worn throughout the season by Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema and Luka Modric, the latter going on to be named the Best FIFA Men's Player that September.
