The 2018/19 season marked the beginning of a new era following Roma's memorable run to the UEFA Champions League semi finals the previous year. Eusebio Di Francesco remained head coach, but several key players had departed during the summer, including Radja Nainggolan, Alisson Becker and Kevin Strootman. Roma finished sixth in Serie A with 66 points, securing qualification for the UEFA Europa League. In the Champions League, they progressed from a group containing Real Madrid, Viktoria Plzeň and CSKA Moscow before being eliminated in the Round of 16 by Porto after extra time, losing 4-3 on aggregate. Edin Džeko was once again Roma's leading goalscorer with 14 goals in all competitions, while Nicolo Zaniolo had his breakthrough season, scoring twice against Porto in the Champions League and winning Serie A's Best Young Player award.

AS Roma have played at the Stadio Olimpico since 1953, sharing the stadium with city rivals Lazio. The venue has hosted the 1960 Olympic Games, the 1990 FIFA World Cup final and multiple European Cup and Champions League finals. Roma's home colours are based on the official colours of the city of Rome, dark red and golden yellow, which have appeared on almost every home shirt in the club's history. The club won their most recent Serie A title in 2000/01 and remain one of Italy's most supported teams, with the Derby della Capitale against Lazio considered one of the fiercest rivalries in European football.
