Spain 2020 Home Shirt

The Spain home shirt released for UEFA Euro 2020 marked exactly one hundred years since the Spanish national team first competed at an international tournament, the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, where Spain won the silver medal. Rather than using a traditional solid red shirt, adidas created the graphic by digitally breaking the Spanish flag into thousands of coloured pixels, producing different shades of red and burgundy across the front. Although the shirt was introduced in late 2019, it was worn at UEFA Euro 2020 in the summer of 2021 after the tournament had been postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Spain reached the semi finals under Luis Enrique after defeating Croatia 5-3 following extra time in the Round of 16 and Switzerland on penalties in the quarter finals. Their tournament ended after another penalty shootout, this time against eventual European champions Italy following a 1-1 draw. Pedri, who was only 18 years old, started every match and was named UEFA's Young Player of the Tournament, while goalkeeper Unai Simón recovered from his mistake against Croatia to become one of Spain's standout performers in the knockout stage. Alvaro Morata finished as Spain's joint top scorer with 3 goals, including the equaliser against Italy in the semi final.

Spain's style of play changed noticeably during this period. Unlike the team that won the 2010 World Cup and UEFA Euro 2008 and 2012 with experienced players such as Xavi, Iniesta and David Villa, Luis Enrique built his squad around a younger generation including Pedri, Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo and Aymeric Laporte. Sergio Busquets was the only remaining player from Spain's 2012 European Championship winning squad and captained the team throughout the tournament. Reaching the semi finals was Spain's best result at a major tournament since winning UEFA Euro 2012 and marked the beginning of a new generation that would later go on to win UEFA Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup.
